With regard to the current US military involvement in Libya, it is said:
Similarly, NATO allies must still rely on American Awacs planes and refueling aircraft, American suppression of air defenses and American intelligence gathering. Even with the United States playing a secondary role, by mid-May its operations in Libya had already cost $664 million, according to a Pentagon memo circulating in Washington, The Financial Times reported.
New York Times, June 10th, 2011
What I want to know is how much it would cost the US taxpayer if the USA was not taking part in the Libyan conflict. All the costs of those planes, ships, servicemen, fuel, provisions, payroll etc etc etc would still exist. Operations would still continue, exercises would take place etc etc etc.
It seems to me the only extra that the US taxpayer has to pay is for munitions actually being dropped on Libya?
Where is my thinking wrong?
